How did I create the waving flag animation in Blender?

If you've ever watched a documentary or sports video before, you've certainly seen a flag waving in the wind. This animation is used a lot, especially when showing national flags or sports club logos.

Honestly, I used to think that creating this animation in Blender required a lot of settings and heavy experience with physics simulation, but after trying it out on several projects, like the Algeria Independence Day celebration video for the Qamra page, I discovered it's simpler than I imagined, and that Blender provides everything you need to create a realistic flag animation in a short time.

In this tutorial, I'll show you the method I personally use to create the flag-waving animation in Blender, with settings, step by step — starting from creating the object and ending with the final result you'll see at the end of the article.

Before I start explaining how to create the flag flutter animation, you, dear reader, should at least have knowledge of the basic principles of Blender and how to work with the interface, because I won't explain everything in tedious detail — this article is aimed at those who have already used the program, even at a basic level.

Modeling the Flag and the Pole

Adding a Cylinder

First, we add a Cylinder to the scene — this object will become the pole the flag is mounted on. After adding it, we adjust the height and diameter to the size we need. In my case, I used the shortcut S then X with Shift + Z to quickly resize along the correct axis.

Next, we add a small Sphere and place it at the top of the pole to give it a more professional look. Then we select both objects together and apply Shade Smooth to get softer edges.

The next step is adding a Plane, which will be the flag itself. After adding it, adjust the length and width to match the flag shape you want, then change the Rotation value and position it correctly next to the pole.

After finishing the basic adjustments, I recommend pressing Ctrl + A then Apply All Transforms, especially for the flag. This step is very important and can save you a lot of trouble later when applying the physics simulation.

Subdividing the Flag and Setting Anchor Points

Now we enter Edit Mode and add Loop Cuts using the shortcut Ctrl + R.

In my case, I added 8 cuts along the length and 16 along the width. These values aren't mandatory — you can use different numbers depending on your machine's power and the result you want to achieve. But after several tests, I found these values give an acceptable result without excessive resource consumption.

You should know that increasing the number of subdivisions makes the cloth motion more realistic and smooth, but in return, you'll need stronger hardware and more time to calculate the simulation.

Then, still in Edit Mode, we press the number 1 to switch to Vertex Select mode, and select the points where we want the flag to stay attached to the pole.

After selecting these points, we go to the Data Properties tab, create a new Vertex Group, and click Assign to assign the selected points to this group, since we'll need it shortly inside the cloth settings.

Once done, we exit Edit Mode, select the flag, and add a Cloth Simulation modifier from the Modifiers menu.

For this tutorial, I left most of the default settings as they are, then went to the Shape section and selected the Vertex Group we created in the previous step. This step is what keeps the anchor points attached to the pole while the rest of the flag moves.

Now all that's left is adding the wind, so we add a Wind Force and place it directly behind the flag, then raise the Strength value to about 140.

You can, of course, try higher or lower values depending on the result you want — the stronger the force, the more violent the flag's motion, and vice versa.

With that, we've finished creating the flag flutter animation in Blender. As you can see, the method is very simple and doesn't require complicated settings. Once you run the simulation, you'll get a flag moving naturally from the wind, and you can then add the texture of any country, team, or logo you want to use in your project — I added my own logo.
